Mastering the Art of Capsule Wardrobing

A Capsule Wardrobe is a handful of well-chosen pieces that can be mixed and matched to make different outfits. There are many benefits to a Capsule Wardrobe. The first, being that it is highly cost effective. The ability to get a variety of looks out of a few key pieces will prove to be economical. This type of wardrobe also helps simplify the outfit picking process. Knowing which pieces match in your wardrobe will save you time getting dressed each day.

I had been Capsule Wardrobing before I even knew the term existed! When I first started working for Saks in Atlanta, Georgia, I was living on a limited budget. The environment was very upscale; the customers were always dressed up and put together to go shopping. At Saks, we were required to wear black. I invested in a practical black suit that even included a vest! To pair with the suit, I purchased a white shirt, a few silk blouses, a wonderful sweater set, and a knit turtleneck. This is what my Capsule Wardrobe was comprised of. Every morning, I had a variety of different options to mix and match. I never felt like I was wearing the same outfit over and over again since I could make so many different outfits based on what I paired it with. I went to work feeling like I never repeated an outfit.

I recommend a ‘great black suit’ for everyone regardless of her occupation. I’m sure you are wondering what exactly I mean by ‘great’. By ‘great,’ I am referring to something that is classic. It does not necessarily have to be conservative but it should not be too trendy in the sense that it is overly embellished. The suit should be lasting, simple enough that it will not go out of style or be identified as part of a certain time period. It must fit perfectly, meaning that alterations must be done when necessary (remember, they are your friend!). Try and find a suit with a pant and a skirt. This enables even more variety and pairings in your Capsule Wardrobe. I know how difficult it can be to find a blazer, pant, and skirt that fit properly and you like. But once you do, you are prepared for any occasion that may arise. Having the clothes you need when you need them is a key part in ‘getting control of your wardrobe.’

Once you find the suit, you will then need to find the layering pieces. These layering pieces include a white button down shirt, silk blouse, cashmere sweater, or even a simple tee shirt or tank top. Add variety by finding a jacket with a design that can match the solid black suit pants or skirt. All of these pieces can be mixed and matched so that you always have a new and different outfit for work. A perk of purchasing these practical clothes for work, is that they can then be converted into outfits for play. A silk blouse can be paired with a nice pair of jeans and heels for a night out with friends. Or on cooler nights, a cashmere sweater with jeans and leather boots. Capsule Wardobing is extremely useful when traveling. You can pack a carry on with pieces that can be mixed and matched for any occasion that may arise on your vacation.
